That Was The Week That Was — Bangkok

That Was The Week That Was — Bangkok

Bangkok always hits fast — loud, hot, chaotic, intoxicating — and this week was no exception.

Bangkok always hits fast — loud, hot, chaotic, intoxicating — and this week was no exception. From the moment I landed, the city wrapped itself around me again: colour, food, energy, and that unmistakable sense that anything can happen at any time.

I based myself at Radisson Suites Bangkok, which once again proved why it’s one of my go-to hotels in the city. Enormous suites, outstanding staff, and a rare ability to feel calm and personal even when the hotel is full. Being just off Soi 11 means you’re seconds from the action, but far enough away to breathe.

The Bangkok Rhythm

The days settled into a rhythm I love in Bangkok:

  • gym sessions,
  • late breakfasts,
  • afternoons by the pool,
  • admin and meetings ticked off,
  • and massages that genuinely reset the body.

One of the big wins this week was finally getting key banking and residency admin sorted — something that can be painful in many countries but, surprisingly, went smoothly here. That alone made the trip worthwhile.

Food & Perspective

Food-wise, Bangkok delivered as always. From simple, brilliant Thai meals at local prices to more indulgent Western comforts, the contrast is part of the city’s charm. Paying a few dollars for an exceptional Thai dish, then sitting down to a proper steak and comparing global costs of living — it all feeds into perspective. Southeast Asia has changed, prices have risen, but value still exists if you know where to look.

Evenings were mostly relaxed rather than wild. A few early nights, a few quiet dinners, and a conscious effort to keep energy in check. Bangkok can chew you up if you let it — this week was about balance.

Unexpected Highlights

One unexpected highlight was stumbling across a street dragon performance near Soi 11 — kids shutting down traffic with drums, fireworks, and a long, twisting dragon weaving through cars, tuk-tuks and crowds. No permits, no barriers, just pure entrepreneurial chaos. It’s moments like that which remind you why Bangkok never gets boring.

Massage sessions stood out too — particularly in-house treatments back at the hotel. When you find a good therapist in Bangkok, you don’t forget them. It’s not pampering; it’s maintenance.

By the end of the week, Bangkok had delivered exactly what it always does: progress, stimulation, exhaustion, and inspiration — all at once.

Travel Day — Bangkok to Chiang Rai ✈️

Checkout day came quietly. I packed up at the Radisson without rushing — that familiar feeling of closing a chapter properly. The car ride from Sukhumvit out to the airport was smooth, watching Bangkok slowly thin out as the skyline gave way to highways, palms, and open sky.

Bangkok has a strange way of letting go gently. One minute it’s neon and noise, the next it’s calm and spacious — almost reflective.

At the airport, everything flowed easily: bags dropped, boarding sorted, and that familiar travel mode clicked back in. From one of Asia’s loudest cities to one of Thailand’s most understated regions.

Next stop: Chiang Rai — northern Thailand, cooler air, slower pace, and a very different energy. Less chaos, more calm. A reset.

Bangkok locked in. Onwards north.
