Three days on Samui is enough to understand the island. It is not enough to race around collecting every temple, waterfall and beach someone put on a “must-see” list. The mistake most short Samui itineraries make is trying to prove how much can fit into a day.
Big Buddha. Three beaches. Two waterfalls. A market. A sunset bar. Maybe a boat trip if the algorithm is feeling ambitious. You can technically do that. You will also spend half the holiday looking at Google Maps.
A useful koh samui 3 day itinerary should give you three different versions of the island: the temples and north coast, the beaches and slower south-west, and one proper day out on the water.
This plan of MrPaparazziWorld assumes you have three full days. If arrival or departure takes half of one of them, remove something rather than compressing the entire trip.

Day 1: Temples, Choeng Mon and Bophut After Dark
Start in the north-east. The locations are relatively close together, which means less time crossing the island and more time actually doing something.
Big Buddha First

Big buddha wat phra yai koh samui
Go to Wat Phra Yai — Big Buddha Temple early enough that the heat has not turned the stairs into an endurance test.
The temple is close enough to Wat Plai Laem that doing both on the same morning makes far more sense than returning to this part of the island later.
- Go earlier in the day for cooler conditions.
- Dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered.
- Allow time for the viewpoint, but you do not need half a day here.
- Combine the stop with nearby Wat Plai Laem.
Look around, climb up, take in the sea view and move on.
Wat Plai Laem Next
A short distance away, Wat Plai Laem is the more visually complex of the two temple stops.
The complex sits around water and is known for its large Guanyin statue and colourful religious buildings. There is considerably more to walk around here than at Big Buddha, so give it enough time to explore instead of photographing the first statue and leaving.

Spend the Afternoon at Choeng Mon
After two temples, stop sightseeing.
Choeng Mon works well because it keeps you on this side of the island while giving you several hours where nothing needs to happen.
- Have lunch.
- Swim.
- Walk the beach.
- Sit somewhere and do absolutely nothing for a while.
This is also the part of Samui where a quieter resort stay can make considerably more sense than choosing a hotel purely because the nightlife nearby is famous.

Finish at Fisherman’s Village
Go to Fisherman’s Village in Bophut for the evening.
It is tourist-facing, and there is no reason to pretend otherwise. The area is now a mix of restaurants, bars, shops and market stalls, but that is also why it works well for an easy evening.
If your stay includes Friday, the established Walking Street makes the area significantly busier.
Walk first. Then decide where to eat.
That rule works surprisingly well in Samui.

Day 2: The Beach Loop — Without Trying to Stop Everywhere
Day two is the road-trip day.
Not the “stop every eight minutes because Google Maps has another camera icon” road trip.
A selective one.
Quick Stop at Lad Koh Viewpoint
Leaving the Chaweng side, Lad Koh Viewpoint is worth a short stop for the coastline.
Do not build an itinerary around it. Think of it as a quick roadside viewpoint rather than a destination.
- Stop for the coastal view.
- Take a few photographs.
- Allow roughly a short visit rather than planning a full activity around it.
- Continue toward Lamai and Silver Beach.
Get to Silver Beach Before Lunch
Continue toward Silver Beach, also known as Crystal Bay.
The bay is small, which is part of its appeal and also why arriving earlier makes sense.
Beach conditions can vary after bad weather, so judge what is actually in front of you rather than expecting every day to look like the promotional photographs.
Stay for a swim if conditions are good. Then keep moving.

Lamai and Hin Ta Hin Yai
Have lunch around Lamai, then stop at Hin Ta and Hin Yai if you are already nearby.
The rock formations are unusual and very easy to incorporate into the route, but they do not require an hour-long philosophical investigation.
Treat them as an interesting stop while exploring this part of the island rather than the reason for the whole journey.

What About Na Muang Waterfall?
I would make Na Muang Waterfall optional rather than automatic.
Conditions vary substantially depending on rainfall, and the experience can be very different between wet and dry periods.
- Check recent conditions before driving there.
- Do not assume the waterfall will look like photographs taken during wetter months.
- Be cautious with steeper hiking routes.
- If conditions are poor, skip it rather than forcing it into a three-day schedule.
Three days is short. You do not need to include something just because every old itinerary includes it.

End at Lipa Noi for Sunset
Continue west and let the afternoon slow down at Lipa Noi Beach.
It is considerably quieter than Samui’s main east-coast beaches and works well as the final stop on a driving day.
- Walk the beach.
- Have a drink somewhere nearby.
- Stay for sunset if the weather cooperates.
- Do not schedule another attraction immediately afterward.
Day 3: Give Ang Thong the Whole Day
The reason this koh samui 3 day itinerary gives an entire day to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park is simple: once you commit to a boat trip, it effectively becomes the day.
Ang Thong lies west of Samui and is one of the island’s established marine-park excursions.

Ang thong national marine park
Depending on the operator, weather and sea conditions, a day trip can include:
- Boat travel through the archipelago.
- Kayaking.
- Beach stops.
- Hidden lagoons.
- Snorkelling on some itineraries.
- Viewpoints, including Ko Wua Talap on selected tours.
Book according to the type of boat and itinerary rather than simply selecting the cheapest thumbnail.
A slower large boat and a speedboat do not produce the same kind of day.
Also confirm whether the quoted tour price includes the national-park fee.
One Important Seasonal Catch
Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park normally has an annual tourism closure during November because monsoon conditions can make travel unsafe.
Weather and sea conditions can also result in additional cancellations, so confirm the trip close to departure.
If Ang Thong is unavailable, do not panic and book three random half-day tours to compensate.
Use the day for:
- another good beach;
- a Thai massage or spa;
- a long lunch;
- exploring a neighbourhood you missed;
- returning to the part of Samui you actually liked.
That is still a holiday.
Getting Around Without Making It Complicated
Samui looks small on a map.
That does not mean you should spend three days riding a scooter if you have little or no riding experience.
For a short trip, the practical options are:
- Rental car: useful if you want flexibility and are comfortable driving locally.
- Car with driver: useful for sightseeing days without worrying about navigation or parking.
- Taxi or transfer: straightforward for individual journeys.
- Scooter: only if you have the appropriate licence, documentation and actual riding experience.
For only three days, paying slightly more for easy transport can remove a surprising amount of friction.
Especially if there are two or more of you.
What I Would Skip
The easiest way to ruin a short Samui trip is to treat the island like a checklist.
- Trying to combine Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Ang Thong:
three days is not enough to make that enjoyable. - Five beaches in one afternoon:
you will remember the car more clearly than the beaches. - Crossing the island for one Instagram café:
only do it if you genuinely want to go there. - Adding attractions simply because they appear on every old itinerary:
current conditions matter more than tradition.
Three Days, Three Different Versions of Samui
| Day | The Experience |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Temples, Choeng Mon and Bophut |
| Day 2 | Coastline, beaches, Lamai and sunset |
| Day 3 | Ang Thong and a full day on the water |
Three days becomes useful when each day has a purpose.
The point of a koh samui 3 day itinerary is not to leave having technically visited the highest possible number of locations.
It is to leave knowing which version of Samui you would come back for.
That is a much better use of three days.
