Best Beaches in Koh Samui (The Honest Version)

by Lewis Paparazzi | Sep 8, 2026 | The Black Book, Asia Tours

The best beaches in Koh Samui — Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam and the quieter ones most lists skip the caveats on — from someone who’s swum at every single one of these.

Every “best beaches” list for this island reads roughly the same: seven photos, seven superlatives, zero mention of the jellyfish. Beaches are obviously only one part of things to do in Koh Samui — this piece is just the sand-and-water side of it, done properly. I’ve swum at most of these more times than I can count, and I’ve had friends stand on a few of them looking distinctly less impressed than the drone shots promised. So here’s the version with the actual caveats left in.

I post more on Instagram than I ever get around to writing up properly — where I’m eating this week, which villa I wouldn’t book twice, the beach nobody’s found yet. If you want that before it turns into a full article, follow @darrynbig

Chaweng Beach

Best beaches in koh samui - Chaweng Beach

The famous one, and for good reason — 7km of proper white sand, warm clear water, and enough beach clubs and restaurants that you’re never more than a few steps from a cold drink. The north end is calmer and better for a real swim; the south end is where the crowds and jet skis concentrate. Genuine gripe worth knowing: bin coverage along the strip is patchy, so it’s not unusual to find litter after a busy weekend, especially past the main tourist stretch. Go for the energy, not the solitude.

If you’re going to eat your way down the Chaweng strip anyway, here’s where to see what’s actually worth booking ahead instead of wandering in blind.

Lamai Beach

Lamai Beach

Rock formations and cliffs along a Thai beach with clear water

My own pick for the best all-rounder, and I’m not alone — it’s quieter than Chaweng without losing the restaurants and beach shacks that make a full day easy. Hin Ta and Hin Yai, the naturally shaped rocks at the southern end, are worth the short walk regardless of what you think of the innuendo. Two honest notes: dogs roam freely here, which is charming until it isn’t, and after dark the town has a noticeably adult entertainment strip sitting oddly close to what’s otherwise a family beach. Neither ruins the daytime experience.

Choeng Mon Beach

Choeng Mon Beach

Peaceful white sand beach with clear blue skies and calm ocean waters

Consistently the pick for families, and it earns it — soft sand, shallow and genuinely calm water, easy parking right at the beach. Multiple people I’ve spoken to flag the same two issues: it gets loud and crowded past midday as day-trippers arrive, and jet skis currently share water space with swimmers, which isn’t ideal with kids around. Turn up early, claim your spot, and it’s one of the best swims on the island.

If a towel and a book isn’t enough for your lot, this is where I’d actually book the jet ski or water sports session properly, instead of haggling with whoever’s standing on the sand.

Maenam Beach

Best beaches in koh samui - Maenam Beach

A peaceful Thai beach with gentle waves at golden hour

The longest stretch on Samui at over 4km, laid-back, and the sunset views across to Koh Phangan are genuinely some of the best on the island. Here’s the part most lists skip: close to shore, the water can turn cloudy with algae and the odd small jellyfish, and you’ll sometimes see vinegar bottles left on the sand for stings. It doesn’t happen every day, but it happens often enough that hotel staff mention it unprompted. Better viewed as a beautiful, relaxed stretch for walking and sunset drinks than a guaranteed swim.

Silver Beach (Crystal Bay)

Silver Beach (Crystal Bay)

A tranquil tropical beach with clear blue sky, calm waters, and scattered boulders

A tiny, boulder-framed cove tucked near Lamai that has real potential to be the prettiest beach on the island — when it’s quiet. Early morning, before the tour groups and before the neighbouring resort’s day guests arrive, it’s close to perfect. By midday it can feel proprietary, with access sometimes gently discouraged if you’re not a guest next door. Worth the alarm clock, less worth the gamble at noon.

Natien Beach

Natien Beach

Serene sandy beach leading to a small island under a vivid blue sky, almost no one around

The one genuine hidden gem left on Samui, and I’d feel guilty writing about it if it weren’t already slowly getting found. Barely developed beyond one beach restaurant, with an abandoned resort adding to the stranded-island feel, this is where you go for a day with almost nobody else on the sand. Don’t expect facilities beyond a menu of Thai basics and cold drinks — that’s the entire point.

Spots like this are exactly why you don’t want to be relying on patchy hotel wifi to find your way there — sort your data before you go hunting for it.

Thongson Beach

Thongson Beach

A pristine tropical beach with clear blue waters, ideal for relaxation

Tucked away in the north near Bophut, developed just enough for a restaurant or two without ever feeling crowded. It’s the beach people discover on their last day and immediately regret not finding sooner. Clear water, a genuinely relaxed vibe, and none of the towel-to-towel feeling you get further south.

Quick Comparison

Beach Best for Honest caveat
Chaweng Liveliest, best facilities Litter on busy days
Lamai Best all-rounder Dogs on the sand; adult nightlife after dark
Choeng Mon Best for families Busy and jet-ski heavy past midday
Maenam Best sunset views Water can be murky/weedy close to shore
Silver Beach Most photogenic Only really delivers early morning
Natien Best hidden gem Almost no facilities — that’s the appeal
Thongson Most underrated Limited amenities, worth the drive

Compared to what I found on a recent trip to Koh Phangan — where the litter and neglect genuinely soured the whole island for me — Samui’s beaches are, on the whole, noticeably better looked after. That’s not nothing.

That’s the honest rundown of the best beaches in Koh Samui — not the drone-shot version. Which beach actually pairs with which restaurant, which resort has genuinely private beach access versus just claiming it, and the one beach on this island I still haven’t told anyone about — that’s in the Black Book from MrPaparazziWorld.
