Best Resorts in Koh Samui: Where I’d Actually Look, and Why

by Lewis Paparazzi | Sep 25, 2026 | The Black Book

Infinity pools and sunset cocktails are easy to sell. Choosing the right resort is harder. Here’s the more useful way to look at where to stay in Koh Samui. At MrPaparazziWorld, we judge travel experiences by how they actually feel, not how well they photograph in a brochure.

Royal Muang Samui Villas is the property here I can discuss from an actual stay. The others are included because their locations, villa configurations and facilities make them relevant comparisons—not because I am going to manufacture a first-hand review I haven’t done.

Royal Muang Samui Villas — The One I Can Speak About From a Real Stay

Royal Muang sits on Choeng Mon Beach, and its biggest strength is not something you can measure by counting marble surfaces.

It is calm.

When I stayed there, the resort’s tropical gardens, quiet pathways, large bed, pool area and relatively peaceful stretch of beach all seemed to be telling the same story: slow down.

That is more important than it sounds.

Hotels spend extraordinary amounts of money creating things you look at for five minutes. What matters after the Instagram moment is whether you sleep properly, whether the pool is somewhere you genuinely want to spend an afternoon and whether staff notice what you need without turning basic service into a negotiation.

Royal Muang performed particularly well on those fundamentals during my stay. The bed was comfortable, Choeng Mon Bay felt relaxed, and one small but memorable service interaction at the pool showed the sort of proactive hospitality I value.

My full review also documents the limitations: I did not test every room category, facility or service, and one stay cannot prove consistency across an entire resort.

The resort currently offers accommodation ranging from large garden suites to private-pool categories and sea-view pool villas.

  • Best suited to: couples, families and travellers looking for a quieter beach base.
  • Main appeal: Choeng Mon Beach, tropical gardens and a slower resort atmosphere.
  • Worth considering if: you want resort time but still intend to explore the rest of Koh Samui.
  • Probably not for you if: you want Chaweng nightlife immediately outside the hotel.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

Four Seasons occupies a very different end of the Samui resort spectrum.

Its accommodation model is built around hillside villas overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, and the resort information states that every guest villa has a private infinity pool. Larger private residences are available for families and groups.

That immediately tells you what you are buying here: privacy, space and the ability to spend significant parts of the day without needing to leave your villa.

  • Hillside villa accommodation overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.
  • Private infinity pool included with guest villas.
  • Larger residences available for families and groups.
  • Particularly relevant if privacy is a major reason for choosing the resort.

This is the sort of resort where upgrading the room category can fundamentally alter the trip. If your ideal holiday involves breakfast, swimming, reading and watching the sea without negotiating for a pool lounger, a private-pool setup has obvious appeal.

But there is a trade-off.

A resort designed to be a destination in itself makes most sense if you actually intend to use it that way. If you expect to spend every day driving around Samui and returning only to sleep, you may be paying for a level of resort infrastructure you barely experience.

Six Senses Samui

Six Senses sits on a headland at the northern tip of Samui, with villas arranged through natural vegetation overlooking the Gulf.

According to the resort’s current information, it has 67 villas, with 60 featuring private pools.

  • 67 villas across the resort.
  • 60 villas feature private pools.
  • Accommodation ranges from garden-facing hideaways to ocean-front pool villas.
  • Larger villa categories provide additional space and privacy.
  • Wellness and the surrounding natural environment are central to the resort concept.

The appeal here is different again.

Six Senses has built much of its identity around wellness, landscape and a less conventional luxury aesthetic. The resort also operates its Farm on the Hill project and has a large horizon-edge central pool alongside its private villa pools.

This makes more sense for someone who wants the resort to feel integrated into the environment rather than designed as a glossy urban hotel transplanted onto a tropical island.

If polished nightlife, bright social spaces and constant visual stimulation are what you want, W will probably speak your language more clearly.

If your version of luxury involves vegetation, outdoor showers, privacy and fewer reasons to put shoes on, Six Senses is the more obvious comparison.

Banyan Tree Samui

Banyan Tree Samui is another property where the accommodation itself does much of the selling.

Its room inventory is centred on private-pool villas, ranging from garden-facing options to elevated ocean-view and family configurations.

  • Deluxe Pool Villa: listed at 130 square metres.
  • Villa focus: private-pool accommodation rather than a conventional hotel-room setup.
  • Views: selected categories overlook the resort’s private bay.
  • Higher categories: combine ocean views, private infinity pools and larger outdoor terraces.

The important distinction is that this is not simply “a hotel with a nice pool.”

The private pool is part of the basic Banyan Tree proposition.

That matters for honeymooners, couples and families who know they will actually use that privacy. It matters considerably less if your daily plan involves waking at 7am, touring the island until sunset and returning exhausted.

Never pay for a villa feature merely because it looks good in the booking photographs. Pay for it because you know how you travel.

W Koh Samui

W is the obvious contrast to the restrained, retreat-style properties.

The resort sits around the Maenam/Bophut side of the island and currently lists 74 villas, all with private outdoor pools.

  • 74 villas with private outdoor pools.
  • Restaurants and social spaces form a significant part of the resort experience.
  • WOOBAR gives the property a more social identity.
  • Fire shows and entertainment add energy after sunset.
  • AWAY Spa provides the resort’s wellness component.

This is useful because “luxury” does not automatically mean “silent.”

Some people want to disappear into a garden villa and hear absolutely nothing after dinner. Others want music, cocktails, design, people and enough energy that returning to the resort does not feel like ending the evening.

W caters far more obviously to the second group.

Its location also puts Fisherman’s Village within the orbit of an evening out, something the resort itself incorporates into suggested itineraries.

The Breakfast Test Matters More Than the Lobby

One reason I am suspicious of conventional hotel rankings is that they often reward architecture more heavily than daily usability.

The footage supplied for this article shows exactly the sort of details I pay attention to.

  • Is breakfast actually fresh?
  • Is food being prepared properly rather than simply sitting on a buffet?
  • Does coffee arrive without requiring three reminders?
  • Does the beach still feel pleasant once the daytime photographs are finished?
  • Do staff engage naturally, or simply execute a service script?

None of those things is spectacular enough for a brochure cover.

But that is precisely the point.

After three days at a resort, you stop being impressed by the reception desk. The details you experience every morning and every evening become considerably more important.

Those details are much harder to fake.

So Which Resort Should You Actually Book?

The useful way to approach the best resorts in Koh Samui is to stop asking which hotel wins and start asking what kind of trip you are building.

  • Royal Muang Samui Villas:
consider it if you want a calmer, traditional resort experience around Choeng Mon.
  • Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui:
consider it if private-pool seclusion and spending substantial time inside the resort are priorities.
  • Six Senses Samui:
consider it when nature, privacy and wellness are central to the trip.
  • Banyan Tree Samui:
consider it if a large private-pool villa and private-bay environment are major reasons for coming.
  • W Koh Samui:
consider it if you want a luxury resort that keeps some social energy after sunset.

Royal Muang is also the one property on this list where I can point to a documented MrPaparazzi stay rather than relying on resort information to explain the accommodation.

The names are less important than the fit.

Because the most expensive mistake you can make in Koh Samui is not booking a bad hotel.

It is booking an excellent hotel that is completely wrong for the holiday you wanted.

And that is why any honest guide to the best resorts in Koh Samui should tell you just as much about who should not stay somewhere as who should.
