Things to Do in Koh Samui for Couples

Things to Do in Koh Samui for Couples

Skip the beach-and-cocktail cliché list. Here’s what’s actually worth doing together on this island, from someone who lives here and isn’t being paid to say any of it.

Most “romantic Samui” lists read like they were written from a hotel brochure in another country. So here’s a shorter, more honest version — the things to do in Koh Samui for couples that I’d actually suggest to friends visiting, not the ones that photograph best on a resort’s own Instagram. Some of it costs nothing. Some of it’s worth paying for once. None of it is filler.

Start With the Sunset, Not the Itinerary

Most people visit Wat Plai Laem or the Big Buddha in the morning, because that’s when the tour buses go. Go late afternoon instead. Wat Plai Laem in particular is built around a lake, with a multi-armed Guanyin statue rising out of the water, and in the last hour of light it empties out and goes quiet in a way it never does at 9am.

After that, drive up to Overlap Stone viewpoint at the island’s northern tip. There’s a small café up there where you can sit with a coffee and watch both the north and south coasts light up at once — on a clear day, you can see the mainland in the distance. It costs the price of a drink and beats any rooftop bar on the island for the same view.

Get Out on the Water Together

If you want one proper “occasion” activity, the Red Baron sunset dinner cruise is the real thing to know about, not a marketing name. It’s a genuine sailing junk yacht, one of the largest sailing vessels working the Gulf of Thailand out of Samui, departing Petcherat Marina Pier in Bangrak Bay for a roughly three-hour sunset sail with a Thai buffet dinner, soft drinks and fresh fruit included — alcohol is extra, paid on board. Prices vary by operator and package, but expect somewhere in the $90–130 per person range. Book direct or through a reputable operator, and confirm the pickup time for your beach area in advance — they’re staggered.

For something quieter, do Ang Thong National Marine Park as a private day rather than joining a group boat. It’s the same 42-island archipelago of limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons either way, but kayaking through the lagoons without forty other people around changes the whole experience — you’ll pay a premium over the standard group-tour price for that privacy, and it’s worth it if the budget stretches.

A Beach That’s Just the Two of You

Chaweng and Lamai are beautiful and crowded. If that’s not the vibe, there are two better options for things to do in Koh Samui for couples who actually want a beach to themselves. Silver Beach, a small hidden cove tucked between Lamai and Chaweng, has free entry and parking and a fraction of the foot traffic of its neighbours. Or head to Thong Krut Pier on the island’s southwest and charter a private longtail boat out to Koh Tan or Koh Mudsum — a roughly four-hour trip that’s a genuine local experience, with a snorkelling stop and enough time on a near-empty beach to make it feel like your own island for an afternoon.

Slow Down With a Couples Treatment

Spa culture runs deep on Samui, and most of the better spas — from the beach-side resort spas to the smaller independent ones tucked off the main roads — offer side-by-side couples massage rooms, usually as a package with a scrub or facial add-on. It’s not a unique Samui thing, but doing it here, with the ocean audible through an open-air treatment room, is a different experience than the same treatment at home. Worth booking ahead in high season rather than walking in and hoping.

Dinner Somewhere That Isn’t the Resort Strip

Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is the pick. It’s a former fishing community turned into a row of restored shophouses, cafés and restaurants, with a completely different feel in the evening than the big resort strips — closer to a small town than a tourist zone. If you can time it for a Friday, the walking street market adds a proper stroll-and-graze element before or after dinner.

Before You Book Anything

A few practical things worth sorting before you commit to any of the above. If a boat trip is on the list — the Red Baron cruise, the Ang Thong day, the Thong Krut longtail — pack motion sickness medication if you’re prone to it; the water out past the bays isn’t always calm. A waterproof phone pouch earns its keep on every one of these. And if a sunset temple visit is part of the day, bring the one modest outfit that covers shoulders and knees — nobody will stop you at the door if you’re not dressed for it, but you’ll be the only one who isn’t. All of this is covered in more detail on what to pack for Koh Samui, and the rest of the island’s sights — the ones better suited to a group or a full day of sightseeing than a couples itinerary — are on the full things to do in Koh Samui guide.

This list is the free version.

Everything above will get you a genuinely good couple of days on this island. What it doesn’t cover is the specific hotel with the plunge pool worth the upgrade, the one spa I’d actually send a partner to over the others, and the restaurant reservation worth planning a whole evening around. That’s what’s inside the Black Book — Koh Samui edition, and it’s the difference between a good trip and the one you tell people about afterward.
